A Year Down Yonder

November

October came and left in a frantic sort of way.  It's been very windy here (30-40 mph with gusts to 80+) and that is how it feels in my head, too.
It's been one of those months where I've let people down, lost my focus, handled things badly, let myself go, and been an all around disappointment to myself.  The only thing I do right is school and that's not even going as well as I would have hoped.

1.  My weight loss has stalled.
2.  My brother brought his new bride to Tennessee but I couldn't get away from school to go
3.  I didn't protect my dog from a little boy who tormented him into a nervous wreck before I realized it
4.  I had to ask houseguests to leave
5.  I am constantly double booking myself and my kids (health appointments, music lessons, auditions, performances,  working for Tamara, social events) then I forget to tell anyone and everyone's upset
6.  I quit choir and evening church
7.  I got a B- on a test
8.  My son made a party for my anniversary and I forgot to come
9.  I missed a major choir performance for Hope
10. Worst of all, I've been mean to Cris because I don't feel loved and yet I'm pretty difficult to love right now.
11.  Things with God seem pretty quiet right now.  I'm hoping it's like that cheesy "footprints" poem.
12.  I am beginning to doubt that I can bear public school.  The WASL is a monster that must die.

Sorry this is so negative.  I will post again when the mood is better.

One more month

September is here!

August didn't work out according to plan in many ways...not all bad, but some very difficult.

1.  Hope and Grace began their first days of public school ever.  So far, so good.

2.  I began my real coursework at Washington State University.  Mostly good, except for   Diversity Issues which is borderline unbearable.

3.  I lost 7 more pounds this month and donated two huge baskets of size 18, 20, and 22   clothes to the thrift shop.  I'm out of casual clothes so I dress up a lot.  I feel pretty.

4.  Joan didn't move and I am so glad. I need her to stay here for now.

5.  My husband (read best friend) took a job in South Carolina and moved there without
us.  I don't know...it made sense at the time.  I cry a lot.

6.  Hope turned out for Cross Country.  Our first athlete in the family.

7.  I watched a teenage boy make a complete and charming fool of himself over my            youngest daughter at church camp.  Smart boy.

8.  Camp Wooten was still intact after last year's devastating forest fires.  I hope it makes it     this year.  New fires rage as I write this.

9.  Eric shopped, but didn't buy his first car.  But he did buy all new bedroom furniture and paint for his room.

10.  I successfully pitched a short term missions trip to Trinidad and Tobago for summer     2008 to our church outreach committee.  Next, the elders.

11.  I got my first financial aid check and the first installment of my scholarship for WSU.           It's a strange feeling as I don't ever have my "own" money.

12.  My Japanese son now has a car, an apartment, bills, friends, and clothes that I have never seen.  The apron strings are being cut.

13.  Our home computers are all wireless now except for the dinosaur laptop that refuses    to cave in to peer pressure.  My new laptop has video-Skype for talking to Cris in SC     and hopefully to Alex in Japan soon.

14.  Grace Grammar School has started without me.

September is ripe with possibility.

A month of change

 July was wild...

Cris got laid off from his job at Fluor

Tamara had a drastic surgery on her neck

Alex was in a car wreck then moved to Japan (unrelated events)

I lost seven pounds

Eric bought a full drum set

I finally caught the mouse that has been terrorizing my kitchen

Grace joined the cast of "OZ" on the outdoor stage at CBC

Hope is so beautiful it's mind-blowing

Hero didn't dig in the yard

Crossposted by Alex

And the worst injury I got was a rug burned elbow and a stiff neck! I was riding shotgun and my friend was driving. In short, we were going straight through a green light and a guy turned left from an outside lane across traffic and smacked into our left rear corner. The car spun (once?) then popped up on its right tires (which was actually pretty neat) then fell over on its right side and slid for a bit. Several windows including the one next to my face exploded. Then the guy who hit us takes off, leaving behind several large pieces of his car. They eventually turned themselves in and went to jail.

A few seconds post impactus () my friend, who is dangling by her seatbelt above me asks if I'm ok. I check myself over, half expecting my arm to be full of glass or lying 10 feet away or something. Nope. GUESS WHO WAS WEARING THEIR SEATBELTS? A host of onlookers come over tocheck on us and we climb up and out the driver's side window. Everyone is telling us that it was the other guy's fault and mostly that they couldn't believe that we were not hurt.

BEHOLD A DIAGRAM!

I didn't get any pics of the car on it's side but as you can see in this next pic, the mirror is totally flattened into the side. Also all that stuff fell out of the window. My friend keeps a lot of stuff in her car.

And a look at the INSIDE of the sturdy car.

And here is the best part. The point of impact.
The jerk who hit us and fled, pasted his licence plate to the bumper. When the flipped the car back on its wheels, the licence plate was stuck to the side. If this pic doesn't scream "owned" I don't know what does.

All in all, a very exciting evening. We were headed to Blockbuster and ended up walking there. We rented Final Destination 2 ... The guy who hit us was caught and he had all kinds of insurance so my friend is getting a new car and I'm getting a free trip to the doctor. Got X Rayed, I'm fine. Little sore but I'll live.

And all this TWO DAYS before I head off to Japan!
I'm Alex McGavik and I approve of this wreck.

July 4, 2006

The Broadway Babes just sang at the GURC 4th of July picnic.  They did very well and seemed to go over well with the crowd.  It's not like it was a tough crowd.  They did several patriotic songs, two raps, a Christian children's song, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight.  They weren't going to sing that much, but the crowd had other ideas.  No mics or any stage and all outdoors, but still a good sound.

It's 100 or 103 today, depending on which thermometer you look at.  The river looks good.
I hope Grace stays hydrated out in the sun at a concert she is attending this afternoon.  We were going, but it was so hot we were feeling a little ill.  Tonight, we meet here then head over to Columbia park for a few hours before the girls put on their real show at 9 pm.  They are the last show before the fireworks start around 10 pm.

Time for more iced tea.
